The Social Media Hierarchy of Needs: Why Your Content Isn't Connecting
You've probably seen Maslow's hierarchy of needs: food and shelter at the bottom, self-actualization at the top. The idea is simple. You can't reach the higher levels until the lower ones are solid.
I think social media works the same way.
Most brands want the top of the pyramid: content that moves people, gets shared, and builds a loyal community. But they skip the steps underneath. Here's the framework I use, from the ground up.
1. Tools + Social Media Fundamentals
This is the foundation: equipment, editing tools, platform knowledge, posting mechanics, analytics, and the basics of photo and video. If you don't know how each platform works, or you can't consistently produce decent content, nothing else on this list is possible.
2. Visual Identity
Once you can create content, make it look like you. Consistent photography, video style, typography, color, and editing build trust and recall. People should know it's your post before they see your name.
3. Brand Voice + Context
Now go deeper than looks. What are your values, your personality, your place, your community, and the bigger story you're telling? This is where content stops being generic and starts having purpose, perspective, and authenticity.
4. Audience Connection
Great content is made for someone specific. It means understanding what your audience wants, what frustrates them, what they care about, and what makes them stop scrolling. Relevant and valuable beats clever every time.
5. Emotional Connection
This is the peak, and it's the real goal. Every post should move, uplift, or resonate, whether it inspires, entertains, makes someone laugh, teaches them something, or makes them feel seen. This is what people remember, share, and come back for.
So where are you on the pyramid?
When social media isn't working, it's usually because something lower down is shaky. A brand with beautiful visuals but no clear voice feels hollow. A brand with a strong voice but no consistent look is hard to recognize. And a brand that's posting constantly without knowing its audience is just making noise.
The good news is that you can build it step by step, starting wherever the gap is. Build strong here. Grow higher.
